Pax stared numbly at the road blurring outside the windshield and let it lull him into a blank state. He didn’t want to feel the pressure of Surefire’s possible death looming over him like a weight dangling from a weak chain.
Oracle hadn’t said much since they started driving to DC. She kept her eyes on the road even if she couldn’t physically see it. St. John was silent, too, sitting in the back seat of Pax’s SUV. He had called in a favor from his Army comrade Withers, and he and his specialized team were on standing orders until told otherwise. But he was in the dark as well. Expert troops at his disposal couldn’t help him retrieve his daughter—or keep Surefire’s identity from being leaked to the press.
Anger twisted Pax’s insides, and again he tried to blank out his mind. This case was growing more and more out of his control, and the latest development was enough to send Pax over the edge.
Before they had left U-Sec’s garage, St. John’s wife, Vanessa, had called in hysterics. A cable news network—a conservative one, not too fond of transhumans—had begun showing a clip of the first Smithsonian security footage with Raven slinging Surefire over his shoulder and running out of the room. Pax had pulled up the broadcast on his smartphone. Blurred images of Smithsonian guards spoke about Raven holding Surefire hostage and then disappearing from outside the museum. There was a shaky low-res video, probably taken from someone’s smartphone of Heather St. John speaking with Pax. These were followed by interviews with warehouse workers, some with faces darkened and voices disguised, who attested that Surefire had helped Raven escape from the warehouse.
Pax was going to have a long discussion with Matthews and several others about how to keep evidence about an ongoing investigation from being leaked to the press. It was a topic they had discussed in the beginning of the night with the entire crew, but obviously a few had missed the memo. Pax also considered posting a no-phone policy at any future crime scene overseen by U-Sec.
Reporters were calling Surefire the next Patty Hearst and speculating on why this former athlete was working for U-Sec. Is she a transhuman? If so, what is her ability? Is Heather, her twin, a transhuman, too? Pax’s cell had rung several times with numbers he hadn’t recognized and wasn’t about to answer. He had told the office to offer no comment on the case.
However, Heather was already giving telephone interviews, denying the transhuman label—for herself and her sister—and asking the audience to pray for Synthia’s safe return and for her sister to do the right thing and turn herself and Raven in to authorities. Sponsorships were on the line for Heather. An unstable sibling making the news could either cast sympathy on her or make people wonder whether she was unstable as well, or more specifically, an unstable transhuman.
Pax’s phone rang, and he jerked the wheel.
“Concentrate on the road. I’ll get it.
